Welcome to the world Lexi Addison Wahlquist!!!
I am so glad to finally be able to say that! Before I forget all the details I thought I'd better share Lexi's birth story. So here goes...
As you know, we had our growth scan at 36 weeks 1 day and she was already measuring over 8 pounds. The doctor scheduled an induction for November 13th. I had my membranes stripped at my appointment on the 2nd and was just sure it would send me into labor like it did with Tate. I had all the grandparents on alert and Frances even stayed in town an extra day after Halloween to watch Tate when labor started. Well, Friday came and went with absolutely nothing. I was so incredibly discouraged and thought "Well, I guess she's not coming until the 13th". I worked Friday and we had a family day Saturday with just the 3 of us.
Sunday morning Tate came into my room sometime in the middle of the night/early morning so he was with me when we woke up at 8 am. He started getting out of bed and I felt something leaking. I literally thought to myself "I don't think I'm peeing. Am I peeing? No, not peeing". Lol! I called for AJ to come help me get up and told him I was pretty sure my water had just broken. We were both kind of shocked at first and started trying to figure out what we needed to do. I called Labor & Delivery and asked how soon I had to come to the hospital. They said I could shower and get ready and then head over. Our daycare provider, Krissy, was our emergency person to watch Tate until family arrived. Well, her family goes to church on Sundays and I wasn't sure what time they left. I quickly called her and she said they were walking out the door, but would wait for Tate. So, AJ was already in the shower and I'm trying to gather clothes for Tate and pack his diaper bag while calling my parents to get them on the road. Tate (of course) poops so AJ gets dressed, gets Tate dressed, and takes him over to Krissy's house (about a mile away). I am tearing up saying goodbye to my baby and making sure he has breakfast for the car, milk, and his breathing machine because of course he needed a treatment and hadn't had one yet. It was pretty chaotic for about 20 minutes! Once the boys headed out, I showered and got dressed. At this point, I'm leaking faster and am trying to hurry up and get the rest of my things together. I managed to waddle down to the basement and send over the latest copies of my maternity leave info to my boss, set my away message on my email and grab my work phone. As I'm heading to the car, my water is starting to really gush and become a problem. I put my work phone away message on in the car and we hurried to the hospital.
AJ let me out at the door and I wrapped a dog blanket (that I was sitting on) around me since my pants were all wet now (water breaking is super glamorous!). Luckily, they put me straight in a room and I didn't have to do the triage part since it was very obvious that labor was starting. I got changed into a gown and into the bed (interesting because of the water still leaking!). At this point, I had no contractions and was sitting up smiling and joking with the nurse. Our nurse turned out to be one of my favorites from when Tate was born so that was awesome and very comforting. We loved Amber! By the time we got to the hospital it was 9 am and by the time I was all settled it was about 9:30 and my family was in Sedalia about an hour away. The nurses started my IV, sent off my bloodwork, and checked me- I was at 5 cm. They wanted to wait a little bit to see if the contractions would start on their own before doing the pitocin. I started having some contractions and went ahead and requested my epidural. Luckily, my mom arrived shortly before the anesthesiologist so she was with me when they did the epidural. With Tate, I was in so much pain from the back labor that I do not remember the epidural at all. This time, I was very aware and scared. It actually wasn't painful, just lots of pressure and yuckiness. The lady got it in, then tried the test meds and nothing happened! For some reason it didn't work so she had to take it out and do it all over again. Thank God it worked the second time. The meds kicked in immediately and I stopped feeling the contractions. They started the pitocin and said they would increase it every 30 minutes until my contractions got strong enough to start dilating me more.
It took a few hours to get things going and I had to ask for an increase in my epidural meds when the right side started wearing off early (maybe 1 or 1:30ish). The extra dose made my legs feel like bricks and lasted 2 hours. About the time it started to back off a little, the nurse checked me and I was 7-8 cm. Shortly thereafter, I started having sharp pain in my right hip. I called the nurse to discuss. I didn't want another dose of the pain meds because I had to be able to push pretty soon and I couldn't feel anything with the last dose, but I didn't like this severe pain. I thought we'd just roll me over to my right side and let gravity help get the meds to the right side again. The nurse decided to check me before rolling me over and surprise- 10 cm! I freaked out! I couldn't be at 10 that fast. It took forever to get from 5-7 cm. The nurse had said once I was fully dilated we'd do some practice pushes to see how long she thought it would take me. From there, she would call the doctor and let her know to either come right away or hold off and let the nurse push with me for a while. I pushed for like 2 hours with Tate so I was fully expecting to push with the nurse for some time before calling the doctor. So, I did 2 practice pushes with the nurse (and no feeling in my left leg still) and she said to stop and don't push and she was going to call the doctor and tell her to hurry over. Again, freaking out! At this point, I'm not even sure my doctor is going to make it because I'm trying hard NOT to push with each contraction. Baby nurses start arriving in the room and I know things are happening very fast at this point. My doctor walks in, gets her outfit and gloves on and we push. Half a push and she tells me to stop. The cord is around baby's neck and her heart rate has dropped to 70 something. She cuts the cord so Lexi can breathe and I can see the doctor looking at the screen and saying we need to push now (rather than waiting for the next contraction). So, I push and out comes baby.
3.5 pushes total. Ridiculous! They gave her to me and I was concerned that she wasn't crying. They took her over to the warmer and I remember just saying "Is she okay, why isn't she crying?" over and over. My mom was over with her and everyone is telling me she's okay, but I don't hear her crying. They gave her a little oxygen and she started crying. Hooray! She was still early, so it was taking her a bit to figure things out. The doctor is stitching me up and she and Amber are talking to me trying to distract me from Lexi (so I wouldn't worry). It was super fast compared to the clean up process with Tate (we did cord blood banking with him and that was a lengthy process), but it seemed like forever until they brought her back to me. It all happened so fast and was unexpected that day. I think I was in shock the whole first day and night in the hospital.
My dad and brother were able to come in about 15 minutes after she was born and then AJ brought Tate and Grandma Frances to visit a little bit later.

Growth Scan
Had our growth scan today to see how big Miss Lexi is. It was fun to see her again after 4 months! The tech was unable to confirm that she's a girl, but did say she didn't see any boy parts down there so that's good news.
At this point (36 weeks 1 day), Lexi "should" be a little under 6 lbs. Of course, this is just average and assumes that your baby will be about 7 1/2 lbs at birth. Let's review that Tate was 9 lbs 14 ounces and born on his due date. So, I'm expecting little miss to be bigger than 7 1/2. I've been telling my doctor for weeks that I just know she's huge because her movements have been downright painful for months now. Sadly, I was right!
I had people guess on Facebook how much she would be right now. Guesses ranged from about 6-7 1/2 lbs. Turns out she's 8 lbs and "some change" right now. Granted this measurement is +/- 2 lbs (super accurate info there), but I have a feeling she's pretty close to that 8 pound mark. If she gains the "typical" 1/2 pound per week, we're looking at another 10 pounder. Joy! Based on the measurements (head, tummy, and femur), she's measuring at 37 weeks 6 days. They do 3 measurements of each area and average them and let me tell you that far too many of those measurements were in the 39 week range. I was relieved when the tech said only 37 wks 6 days!
So, what does this all mean? Who knows really. I go for my weekly Obgyn appt on Friday so I'll know more then when my doctor can review the whole report. My OB has said she doesn't induce for size so I'm pretty concerned. Why do the growth scan? Well, if she's estimated to be over 4500 grams (about 10 lbs) at her due date, then we can discuss planning a c-section. I will never choose to have a c-section unless it becomes medically necessary, but it is good to have an idea of what we're dealing with. Luckily, I have the Ehlers Danlos connective tissue disorder so my body is more stretchy than it should be. That definitely helps when you're expecting a big baby. However, if she's too big and I would need a c-section that is super bad news. Because of the disorder, my body makes bad scar tissue and a c-section could really cause a lot of problems for me in the long run. Plus, I think it's super important for babies to be pushed out so they get all that fluid out of their lungs. There's also info that being pushed out helps with all kinds of sensory processing and we already know that sensory issues run in the family.
I want to make sure that she stays in and grows enough to be healthy and not have to stay in the hospital any extra, but at the same time I really want her out a couple weeks early- I'd be good with 38-39 weeks. My OB appts are on Fridays, so I'm really hoping that my dr will agree to strip my membranes on the 16th. The 9th would be great too, but I don't see that happening. I am so ready to be done being pregnant and to get this little person out so we can meet her!
The best news is that there's no way I'll be allowed to go over my due date so max 26 days (in 2 hours) until she's here. And it's likely more like 3 weeks! Praying I go into labor sometime in early November. I'll be full term (37 weeks) on Tuesday and I'm totally okay with going anytime in November (want to wait til then so we have 3 generations of girls born in November). So wait a week and then send some serious labor thoughts my way please. Let's meet this little girl already!!!

A post before baby arrives
Well, since I apparently only blog about once a month, I figured I'd better get one written before Little Miss arrives and it goes to every 2 months. :)
What have we been up to lately? Well, AJ and Tate both got sick the first week of October. Tate's illness morphed and continued through last week. It was a very rough 2 weeks. Daycare was closed 3 days and Tate was home sick an additional 2 days all in a 2 week period. Needless to say, I spent lots of quality time with my kiddo, but he didn't get to enjoy most of it. Tate was officially diagnosed with asthma- boo! I'm not surprised (Gramma, Uncle Todd, and I all have it and AJ has severe allergies), but I wasn't expecting him to be diagnosed at 2. He puked a lot and also got a very bad double ear infection and never once touched his ears or said they hurt. Tate is super tired of antibiotics and breathing treatments and we found out that oral steroids make him a crazy person. Like Jekyll/Hyde crazy. Luckily, he is feeling much better!
Tate and I have officially stopped traveling so people are now coming to us. Our last visit to AJ's family was in August or September and our last trip to KC was a few weeks ago. Gramma has been down several times already to help out while we prepare for Lexi's arrival.
Speaking of which... we are finally almost ready. Her clothes are washed and all but one load is hung up. Her hospital bag is packed, her carseat is all adjusted, and we're digging out the large equipment piece by piece. Just need to get some formula, slow flow nipples, and a new baby bathtub and we'll be good to go!
Tate is almost fully well and will be moving back into his room in the next couple of weeks so that the cosleeper can fit in my room. He is very excited to meet "Baby Yexi" and likes to talk about feeding her bologna- lol! He dies laughing every time he says it. It's hilarious to watch! But really, he knows she gets bottles and binkies and we'll hold her and love her and she'll cry a lot. Luckily, there's a new baby at daycare so he kind of knows what to expect.
My Tatey is really growing up. I'm trying to cherish this last month with just him. His language is even more ridiculously advanced in the last 2 weeks. And yesterday he counted to 15. He can correctly identify green, orange, and now blue most of the time. He speaks in whole paragraphs and will tell you all about anything. He likes to sing whole songs by himself and can read you some of his books.
Tate will be starting "preschool" on October 30th. He is going to be a peer model in a 3 year old classroom at the Special Learning Center a few miles from our house. He will model his awesome language and play skills and will get to receive some great sensory and gross motor play while he's there. Double bonus! He will go Tues/Thurs for 3 hours in the morning, then go to daycare. I'm hoping he'll start getting into the routine of it before Lexi comes and he'll have something special to do that's just for him. I think that first day will be much harder on me than him!!!
Our house is finally getting organized after only a year and a half. :) We moved in when Tate was about 9 months old and we basically just shoved things in places. We are now out of space and having to reorganize to make room for baby. The goal is to get anything that is not essential to our daily living into the basement to be dealt with at a (much) later date. And then to organize all the essentials so that we can function easily and efficiently. My parents came this weekend and we got 3 HUGE boxes of medication sorted and organized, rearranged the linen closet, added some child proofing since Tate will not have quite as much supervision when we have a screaming newborn, cleaned out about half the kitchen cabinets and organized bottles/sippy cups, and did massive amounts of laundry. My brother is coming with my mom the last weekend in October to put together all the storage things I've bought- a writing table for bills, a dresser for linens, and a cube shelf for toys. After that, we just need to clean out the rest of the kitchen and all of the closets and we should basically be good to go. Keeping it organized will be the real challenge!
My mental health declines weekly if not daily. I am so not cut out for all the hormonal/emotional changes that go with pregnancy. I cry hysterically at least every 3 days and it goes on all evening long. It's just ridiculous. No one talks about mental health issues during pregnancy. Well, they're not pretty. My anxiety level is through the roof and I've upped my counseling to weekly at this point just to maintain some sort of sanity to get through these last few weeks. I'm hoping I have only 4 weeks to go and that my doctor will agree to induce on 11/16 (my last appt before my due date of 11/20). I go for my next appt Friday and we will schedule a growth scan for next week. Just ready to meet this little girl and be done!!!
And to end on a fun note, we've been doing lots of fall activities lately! My parents and I took Tate to the pumpkin patch this weekend, he and Gramma did some pumpkin crafts, we've taken a few short walks, and we made our Mr. Potato Head pumpkin tonight. We'll probably take him back to the pumpkin patch this weekend and there's trunk or treating, trick or treating, more crafts, and lots of outside play in the nice weather coming up. I LOVE fall!
Hopefully my next post will be announcing the arrival of our newest family member!!! Send labor thoughts my way!

Tate fast asleep at Urgent Care. He was throwing up so much! Turns out it was a bad double ear infection and possible pneumonia. Lovely!

Tate-isms
Let's catch up on all the funny things my Tate is doing these days (24 months):
- Today, you said "Daddy, I need a favor. I need up on the bed."
- Friday, I told you we would go to the airport tomorrow. You jumped down off the recliner and danced around the living room singing "We go to airport, we go to airport!"
- This weekend, you helped daddy mow the lawn with your bubble mower while daddy raked leaves. You also spent about 30 minutes jumping and climbing around in your empty swimming pool. We're already figuring out ways to keep you active this winter- turning the pool into a sandbox, ball pit, or maybe filling it with foam pieces!
- You LOVE sitting in airplanes ("airfanes"), sitting on daddy's motorcycle, sitting in daddy's truck, going to the park, playing outside, swimming, etc. Your enthusiasm is contagious!
- You get excited about everything! Sometimes, I put dinner down in front of you and you say "Wow!". Cracks me up because it's never anything impressive.
- You are super curious/nosy and want to explore everything. But, you're still pretty cautious and are easily scared. We have to be really careful what you watch, see, and hear because you notice and remember everything!
- You love talking on the phone. You start talking while the phone is still ringing! You also like to send text messages sometimes, but lose interest in that pretty quickly.
- You can climb (easily) onto the kitchen chairs and you like to sit up there next to us and draw or just converse. "Mommy, I sit up dere next to you."
- You help with dressing by pushing your arms through your shirt, pulling up the front of your shorts (when prompted), and are learning to take off your socks. You love to walk around in daddy's shoes in the mornings.
- You still like to play with "monies", but not as obsessively as you did a few months ago. Same with the vacuuming.
- You love "fruities" (little chewy fruit things), ask for "yummies" (a snack), and love your "moke" (milk). You have a serious sweet tooth- cookies, brownies, cupcakes, poptarts, waffles, etc! You are definitely a picky eater the last couple months. One week you pretty much live on chicken nuggets and the next you won't touch them. Some days you eat 3 whole meals and other days you just pick all day.
- You know the difference between big and little. You are working on counting (6, 7, 8 is your favorite). Everything is "green"- we're working on this. You love to write your name (T, A, T, never the E).
- You are doing so good with drinking from a regular cup while I hold it. Still drinking milk from a sippy (just because you like to) and all other drinks from a straw sippy cup so you don't spill!
- You love to eat ice. Probably because mommy and daddy do too!
- We finally figured out your sleeping issues (at least for now). You are getting ONLY organic milk now at home and daycare and it's made a huge difference! You no longer need the sleeping pills to help you fall asleep. You are sleeping in your own twin bed in my room while I sleep in the recliner. Mommy or Daddy sits with you while you fall asleep. You usually wake up between 2:30 and 5 and come get me or daddy. I then come sleep in my bed and you go back to sleep in your bed for a little bit longer. Lately, you've been sleeping until 6 or 6:30 most mornings- so nice!!!
- You hate bath time unless you can play with shaving cream. You cry every night when daddy washes your hair. You also cry every night while getting dried off.
- You're doing good with potty training when you're interested. We aren't pushing it. You sometimes ask to go and usually go pee pee when you sit on the potty. Your favorite part is still the toilet paper. You HATE having poopy diapers changed so maybe you'll be potty trained soon so you don't have to deal with it. Still in size 6 diapers.
- You are speaking in 6-7 word sentences (it's incredible!) and can carry on a whole conversation. Recently, when I asked what you did at Krissy's, you said "I play outside. I throw a ball. It go high. I kick it." You will usually tell me about your day, but can never tell me what you ate that day.
- We're still doing PT and OT, but we're not really working on much. Just tweaking some things here and there like oral motor sensitivity.
- You love popsicles! You always ask for a green one, but you don't like the green ones. :)
- You have mastered climbing into your car seat, climbing on the recliner, and can even get onto daddy's bed sometimes. You are almost able to get into your highchair without help. You are going down slides like a pro and even tolerating the swing for a bit. Oh, and you can hop and get both feet off the ground at the same time. You can also walk up and down stairs without help when you want to.
- I make you say goodnight to me every night and say "I love you". I say "I love you my Tatey" and you say "I love you mommy". If daddy puts you to bed, you also say "Goodnight mommy". Best part of my night!!!
- Your favorite books are the Firetruck Song, The Hungry Caterpillar, Caillou Rides a Bike, Put Me in the Zoo, and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.
- Your favorite shows are Caillou, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Doc McStuffins. You also like Gaspard and Lisa, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Dino Dan, and Angelina Ballerina.
- You love to sing songs and dance around. You are so busy and love to jump, run, climb, run into mommy or daddy, jump on the bed, throw yourself on the floor, etc. You wear me out!!!
- You are such a sweet boy and give lots of hugs and sometimes kisses. You love to cuddle while watching TV. You always get super excited when I pick you up from daycare and again when daddy gets home.
You are so darn smart and funny. You continuously amaze us. Daddy and I talk almost everyday about something new you did or said that day. We can't figure out what we did before we had you! You are the absolute light of our lives and the BEST thing that ever happened to us. You continually challenge us to figure out how to be better parents and how to keep you learning and growing. You are teaching mommy lots of patience! I still get so overwhelmed with how such a little person can be so amazing and life changing. You are my whole world kiddo and don't you ever forget that!!!! I love you my Tatey!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tate is 2!
Well, of course, it's been a while since I last blogged. Shocker. Since my last post, my "baby" had his 2nd birthday. I can't believe he's 2!!!
His birthday was on Saturday, August 11th so we celebrated that day with a Caillou party. Grandma and Uncle Todd came Friday night and stayed at the house. Grandma and Grandpa Wahlquist also came Friday night and stayed at a hotel. Paw Paw came Saturday morning. Gramma, Todd, and I spent Friday evening decorating the living room and dining room so that Tate would wake up to a birthday celebration. Finding helium for the balloons was interesting because there is a helium shortage. But, we found some. Todd put up plastic tablecloths strung from the ceiling, we did lots of streamers, and had a banner and the balloons. Gramma made the cupcakes and breakfast casserole. Grandma Frances brought snacks for Saturday.
Tate woke up Saturday morning, got to the top of the stairs and said "That a happy birthday sign!". Kid is a genius, I tell ya! Then he got all excited about the balloons. Then he saw the tablecloths and said "That a superhero". It did look like superhero capes. He was excited to play in the big balloon pile on the floor, too.
We had pizza, chip & dip, pasta, etc for lunch and Funfetti cupcakes with green and blue icing and sprinkles. Tate tolerated us singing Happy Birthday and loved blowing out the candle. We actually had to blow out a candle everytime we ate cupcakes that weekend. The party ended with some fun blowing noise makers and a nap. It was so fun to watch him "get it" this year and interact with everything.
While taking pics of the cupcakes, Tate decided he needed a 2nd one. :)
A giant HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my big 2 year old!!!

Oh sleeping...
Well, if you've been with us for a while, you know that we've had sleeping issues since Tate was born. We ended up doing co-sleeping from the time Tate outgrew his bassinet co-sleeper thing until just a few months ago. We moved him to a twin mattress on the floor of his own room and he took to it surprisingly well. For a while. And then not so much. We originally moved him to his own bed and room because he would wake up all night screaming and crying. Thought maybe he would do better on his own where no one would be disturbing his sleep. Recently, we've been to see the homeopathic PT and a sleep doctor. He's been on a homeopathic sleep aid called Neurexan for about 3-4 weeks. It stopped working about 3 nights ago. AJ and I take turns being on "Tate duty" for the night. Monday night, AJ was up with him half the night and finally put him in his bed around 4. Tuesday night, I was up half the night with him and finally went and slept in his bed at about 3. Being 6 months pregnant and already having back pain issues, I just cannot be getting up and down all night with Tate and I certainly can't be sharing a twin mattress on the floor with a 2 year old. I'm also already starting to have the pregnancy insomnia where I have trouble sleeping and I get up to pee 2-3 times a night.
So, basically our nights look like Tate wakes up crying which wakes me up (whether it's my night with him or not), I get up to pee, Lexi wakes up and kicks like crazy for a while, and I'm awake for 15-45 minutes. This happens anywhere from 1-12 times each night. Since the sleep medicine stopped working and we're already trying reflux meds to see if that makes a difference, we are basically out of options. We're back to either AJ or I (or both) being absolutely exhausted everyday. And my main concern is that Tate is so tired and it affects his daily functioning. He does okay during the day, but the bags under his eyes by the time he gets home from daycare are absolutely ridiculous. And then he's fussy and lethargic all evening. I just want my toddler to be well rested and happy and able to enjoy life to the fullest.
I really didn't know what to do so we took the only suggestion from the sleep doctor that we hadn't tried and moved Tate's mattress to my room. The idea is that he falls asleep with one of us and then needs that same thing to go back to sleep in the middle of the night. We had avoided this option since he had done so well with the move to his room. Desperate times call for desperate measures. And this mama is getting desperate. So, in he came. We removed the nightstand, shoved the bed up against the wall, and put down Tate's mattress. Last night was our first night with this latest sleeping arrangement. And he did great! He still woke up lots, but since he's right there, I hear him start to stir and make noise and I can just say "shh-shh-shh" and he was able to go back to sleep on his own. He did cry out 2-3 times, but I was able to poke my head up, say a few words and lay back down. Very. very. nice. Hopefully tonight will go smoothly as well. The biggest downfall to this plan is that I now have Tate duty every night. And I have no idea where we go from here and what we do when Lexi arrives. But, I guess we take it one day/week/month at a time and figure it out as we go.
I will admit (shh don't tell!) that it was VERY nice having my baby back in my room with me. I loved co-sleeping and I missed him when he moved to his own room. If we can figure out how to have 2 babies in my room and still let everyone sleep, I'm fine with that. They're only little once! :)

A Saturday at Home
Let's face it- we are rarely home on the weekends. Tate spent a weekend at Gramma and Paw Paw's, then he and I went there the next weekend for a Friday doctor's appt, then we went to Indiana the following weekend. We were long overdue for a relaxing weekend at home.
AJ has been having severe anxiety issues so I tried to do lots of fun things to keep his mind off of that.
We spent Saturday swimming several times, "making" cookies, watching Caillou and Disney Junior, and napping. It was really fun to have all that time as a family. I'm trying to cherish as much time with just one kiddo before Miss Lexi arrives and throws our routine out of whack. :)
Tate helped put the Cars cookies on the cookie sheet and learned how to use sprinkles
Shake, shake, shake!
2nd batch
Way more sprinkles on the tray than the actual cookies, but tasty nonetheless
And a popsicle while singing for good measure :)
One of many swimming sessions
I just adore this sweet boy's face!
I'm sure he will hate me for this pic one day! We ran out of swim diapers and he couldn't even move in the regular diaper so I finally just stripped him down. I made sure to spray sunscreen on that white tushy so it wouldn't burn and about 10 minutes later got his swimsuit. Who knows how much pee pee ended up in that pool that weekend. :)
